Today’s subject is miraculous escapes – stories I’ve found about people incredibly getting out of the most dire scrapes in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It goes without saying that if you’re prone to nightmares after hearing stories of long falls, skirmishes with trains, clifftop dramas etc then this video may not be for you! These are tales of people who came within a cats whisker of a terrible fate. I haven’t included the many, many tales I could have chosen from WWI or WWII as stories of people escaping from rubble and bomb strikes doesn’t feel right at the moment with the current situation in some corners of our world all facing that sort of thing right now. So, as I always say grab that cuppa and a comfy seat and settle down to realise how lucky we all are most of the time! As always huge thanks to the British Library Board via the brilliant British Newspaper Archives website - and the permission and guidance I have to use these snippets! Do visit my other channel too, which includes my art-loving day job, coffee drinker and day tripper! @lifeatthemasthead #history #miraculousescapes #closesahves #narrowescapes #humour #newspapers #19thcentury #20thcentury #weird #funny #funnystories #inventions #scandals #eccentrics #historical #social history #social observation
