Bittersweet Hearts: Time travel and dreams of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm

Amy K Bormet, pianist/vocalist and director of the Washington Women in Jazz Festival leads her suite of music honoring the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, a multi-ethnic women’s big band from the 1930’s and 40’s. Using interviews and found text from 1940’s jazz magazines, and projected archival photos, Bormet and her ensemble reflect on the trials and triumphs of these remarkable women, and the echoes of their impact today.
