It is situated about 12 miles north of the city of Bishop's Stortford and about 15 miles south of Cambridge. The town has a population of around 16,000 people. Saffron Walden has a rich history, with evidence of human settlement in the area dating back to the Bronze Age. The town grew in importance during the Middle Ages, when it became a center for the wool trade.
