[Unity3D Hex Map Game Dev] 0: Introduction to Hex Maps

Hello Unity fans. Today I’m starting with a series of videos in which I’ll review, and also add on to, an in-depth tutorial that has me quite excited. I recently came across Catlike Coding’s extremely professional and extensive Hex Map tutorials. I’m busy working through them in order to learn and understand as much of them as I can. Even if you’re not a Unity developer, if you play games you may find this review insightful. I remember when I started playing The Settlers 2 years ago. I had just enough computer science behind me to have some idea of how the game worked behind the scenes, and I appreciated it immensely. I’m currently about 25% through my in-depth walkthrough, but I have scanned over all of the sections, and I’ve actually already started tagging my own features onto the final base project. For example, a spinning object selector that dynamically handles any number of objects, and replacing the blue cubes with actual animated characters. But let’s start at the beginning. You can find all of his tutorials on his website which I’ll link to in the description. They are text-based with screenshots and some short clips, and he also provides PDFs and complete projects as Unity packages at various important points throughout the tutorials. Now, I’m definitely not going to try and translate all of this into video format – there’s really no need to. His format works extremely well and I like the way he’s implemented it. What I’ll be doing is showing you some footage of how the system looks and works in real-time at key points in the tutorial, and my summary of what he’s trying to achieve in each section, why we need to achieve it, and how, on a high level, he goes about getting there. This will give you a very good idea about whether you may want to look into certain sections of the series, or even the series as a whole. What I like about his way of presenting the tutorials is that he takes you through the thought process step by step. You understand and implement something basic first, and then you start thinking about how it could be improved upon, how you plan to make these improvements and even which problems you run into as you work through possible approaches, and how to address them. And through all of this his code remains crisp and organised, he shows you how the structure changes over time as functionality expands. He creates useful methods and ways of getting to required information that will help immensely with any alterations or additions we may want to make.
