Way back during the development of the original Resident Evil, the idea for a prequel came about thanks to the announcement of the 64DD peripheral for the Nintendo 64. This little external disc drive was promising to allow the N64 to make use of more data storage, persistent world design and many other things that were fairly impressive additions to the system. The 64DD would eventually release and be a total flop sales wise, only selling around 15,000 units globally. The team at Capcom really liked the ideas they had for this prequel though, so they started developing Resident Evil Zero as a cartridge-based game for the N64 in mid-1998. The game was originally planned to release in July of 2000, but as the game neared completion, it became apparent to the designers that Resident Evil Zero would not be able to fit on a single N64 cartridge. This put a wrench in development for a short while, but after Capcom and Nintendo signed that little GameCube exclusive RE deal of theirs, development of Zero was shifted over to the GameCube with the original concept and story being carried over. Along with this transition came a sizable delay in the game’s release, as the team wanted to make sure that they upgraded all the models and environments to make full use of the GameCube’s capabilities. Aside from that though, development would move along at a solid pace from here on out, and the game would eventually be released to the world in November of 2002. Resident Evil Zero would then go on to establish itself as one of the most divisive titles in the Resident Evil franchise, with it becoming one of those games that whether you like it or not, you likely have very strong opinions on it if you’ve played it. So with RE Zero having the longest development cycle of any game in the franchise up to this point, would it come out feeling like the most polished and enjoyable game in the series so far? Or would its development woes end up taking too much of a toll on the final product? Well, let’s talk about it. Full Resident Evil Series: • Resident Evil Retrospective Resident Evil Zero (or Resident Evil 0) is a survival horror video game developed and published by Capcom for the GameCube in 2002.
