Civil Servants Banned From Using Taxpayer Funded Credit Cards Over 'Wasteful Spending' Labour will cancel thousands of taxpayer-funded credit cards to crack down on wasteful spending. These government procurement cards, meant for low-value purchases, have seen spending quadruple in four years. Around 20,000 cards are in use, but departments will freeze most of them this week. A stricter approval process aims to cut the number by half. Cardholders must justify their need or lose their cards by month-end. Spending on hospitality will be capped at £500, down from £2,500, with higher amounts needing senior approval. Last year, £675m was spent on the cards, up from £155m in 2020/21, with examples of excessive purchases like £1,200 on luxury coffee pods. Kevin O’Sullivan speaks with senior fellow for The New Culture Forum, Philip Kiszely.
