The final track on D'Angelo's Voodoo album, 'Africa' is a hymn for the soul — a timeless reminder of love, legacy, and the celebration of life. This instrumental cover is my way to pay homage to the 25th-anniversary release of his masterpiece Voodoo and a way to give flowers to D'Angelo, one of the greatest soul artists of any generation. For this cover, I played a blend of instruments that I felt embodied the warmth and soul of the original. The Rhodes and Yamaha U1 upright piano lay the foundation with rich, soulful chords. I layered in a dulcitone (Keyscape) for a nostalgic, bell-like quality, and added an organ (Universal Audio's Waterfall) to create some gospel-inspired depth. In the third verse, I layered a synth pad with some modulation on the UDO Super 6, which gave the verse some expression. The Fender American P Bass grounded the low-end, while reverse electric guitars (panned L and R) provided an atmospheric color. The drum programming—mostly built using Splice sounds—helped me craft a rhythmic pocket that tries to emulate Questlove's iconic style — let's be clear... tries lol. I also captioned the lyrics so you can follow along in the instrumental. I hope wherever this instrumental finds you, it inspires you and resonates with you as much as the original does with me. When you get some time, dive back into D'Angelo's album Voodoo 25 years later and experience this masterpiece all over again. Disclaimer: 'Africa' is a song by D'Angelo from his iconic album Voodoo.
