Fiulian, natively known as Furlan or Marilenghe (“mother tongue”), is a Romance language spoken in the Friuli region of northwest Italy. It is closely related to other “Rhaetian” languages like Romansh, spoken in southeast Switzerland, and Ladin, spoken in the Dolomite Mountains of northern Italy. Friulian has a long history of literature dating back to at least the 13th century. Today, Friulian is spoken by around 600,000 speakers. Although it is officially recognized and protected by the Italian government as a minority language, however, the language is considered “definitely endangered” by UNESCO.
