The Laguna of Port Saint Louis was a perfect spot for my first time with my Soul Flysurfer 21. I have rapidly changed my Peter Lynn (PL) Aero V2 Ultra Light for the Soul and I will report here my experience compared to both the Aero and the Speed 4. Unboxing the Soul was at a first sight pretty much disappointing in regard with the poor bag. Because of the change on the littoral regulation and knowing that we need to walk longer to reach our favourite wild spots like the Beauduc or the Port St Louis laguna I do not consider this as a detail. Same for the PL bag. Previous Flysurfer (FS) bag where just fantastic. Material of the Soul looks strong and light like for the PL. Both kites have reinforced leading edge and the material is screened reinforced with a plastic layer. The PL differentiates a lot with a complex structure made of a large number of ribs and stitching. Bars and lines are comparable. The Soul colours are very dark and favour the heating of the material as the Aero is in a great orange. Lying on the ground the Aero is much longer and the Soul wider. The PL looks impressive by its sophisticated shape. The PL reminds me to speed sailplane with a narrow chord and a narrow span. Profile of the ribs for the Soul is about twice thinker and longer. Preparing the Aero was more complicated because of the larger number of strings. Pre-inflating the sail is comparable. The launch of the Aero and the blowing of it is much difficult. The wing tips are difficult to inflate and it takes time. Tips do bend a lot and I have noticed a significant lack of rigidity. Starting with the Aero V2 was very difficult for me. I was not able to understand how to control the power. For example, even in windy conditions I had to organize a long and fast trajectory to lift my 115 kg. Same when riding, I had the feeling that this racing kite needs to be operated with a lot of speed and faster you go faster this kite wants to go. The problem for me was to access to a kind of critical speed. Indeed it was not appropriate to my skills and to the program I was looking for. I found the Aero very difficult to control and hazardous. Starting with the Soul is straight forward. The kite is powerfull and much more reactive than the Aero and the speed 4. The Soul is very easy to control even with a strong wind. The first key advantage of the Soul is that it is highly predictable and there is absolutely no need for creating lift up and speed trajectories. Just let it go, stand up, relax and fly. Depower of the PL and of the Soul is highly efficient. With the Soul I still had about 2 inches left for further depower. When fully pulled there is no power in both sails. Up wind and down wind are highly efficient as well. A real strength of the Soul compared to the Speed 4 and the Aero is that I did not meet any stall. I had some alerts and the sail recovered so well and so fast instantly. This second key advantage is very important for me because a stall with a 21 tubeless usually ends up with a non-reversible situation. I had to face a lot of stalls with the Aero V2. May be I did not tuned the kite correctly or, may be I was not able to fly it properly but it happened a lot. Aero V2 wing tips had a strong tendency to sheet in and to twist the sail in a form of torch. I have never been able to re-launch the Aero, the whole equipment being tangled every time. As a tubeless light wind rider I feel highly secured with the Soul. I have not experienced yet a need for relaunch even after my big crashs. I will probably spend a video on this aspect. Jumps and turns are intuitive and very impressive with the Soul. Hang time drives you high and on long crossing tracks. On the video I have reported my first jumps. I crashed several times because I did not expected that the Soul is a much more reactive kite compared to the other 21. I have redirected the kite to much and to strongly after the take off and this is why I crashed. In many respects, the Soul is far above all of my expectations: I feel secured with this high torque 21 tubeless kite. If wanted, the kite can go fast and can take you really high or it can be relaxing and recreative even in a strong wind. The Soul is an achievement and it will be a challenge for Flysurfer to improve this kite in the future.
