Asian elephant that was distributed in Borneo islands after sea level rise in Sundaland region had evolved becoming the smallest elephant sub-species in the world after thousand years of isolation. This smallest elephant species is also known as Borneo pygmy elephant which habits the Northeastern of the 3rd largest island in the world, Borneo islands. At Sabah state the elephant that is in captivity at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park are elephants which cannot survive by its own back in wildlife. To protect this elephants which cannot be independent, it is kept at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park. Since the establishment of this Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, the numbers of elephant born in captive breeding has been increasing. Due to cost of keeping this elephant in captivity, from 2023 the male and female elephants are kept at separated compound.
