Introduction to the History of India [lecture of 9 January 2012]. This is the introductory lecture for History 9A (UCLA); the lecture discusses course requirements and furnishes an overview of the entire course. General discussion with some questions in the interpretation of Indian history. Religion in Indian history; some brief comments on the nature of Indian civilization. The immense diversity of India in nearly every respect. Some general comments on the long span of Indian history, what we mean we speak of 'India', the sources for the study of Indian history, the problems with translation--rendering one culture into the terms familiar to us from another culture, and so on. This lecture briefly explores some of the hazards of studying Indian history; and suggests some problems that exist in the study of a culture vastly different from one's own. "South Asia" as an area of study; what are the keywords one might think about in an essentialist vision of India; Roland Barthes's "Empire of Signs" might help us think about the signposts of Indian society.
