What happens when both people in a relationship feel like they have to prove their value in order to be loved? We didn’t realize how deeply this belief was shaping our dynamic. As a nonbinary couple navigating work, identity, and partnership, we discovered that many of the roles we were playing in relationships — from traditional gender expectations to being “the responsible one” or “the attractive one” — were really attempts to earn love rather than simply receive it.
