Two main Kingdoms in Spain, Aragon and Castille, were finally united due to the marriage between King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castille. Together, they managed to join forces to defeat the Emirate of Granada and push the Mohammedans from Europe. It took them 10 years to defeat the Emirate. It ended with the fall of Granada to the hands of the Christians On January 2, 1492. The war started with a surprise attack from the Emirates of Granada against the town of Zahara in December 1481. The town fell and the Christian population was enslaved. The Christians retaliate by conquering Alhama. After that, the war continued at a grinding slow pace. The Christians suffered defeat in the battle of Loja and Axarquia. However, a coup broke out in the Emirate and Boabdil took the throne from his father, resulting in a civil war. The new king was defeated in the battle of Lucena and was captured by Ferdinand's forces. King Ferdinand saw this as an opportunity to divide the Emirates further by using Boabdil to continue fighting his father. His strategy worked as Boabdil and his men became an ally of the Christian force in the fight against the Emirate, and later Boabdil became a vassal of the Aragon and Castillian Kingdoms. After three years of becoming a vassal, and the defeat of his father, Boabdil was not happy with the arrangement and declared war against Ferdinand and Isabella. This resulted in the siege of Granada for 8 months and it ended with the surrender of the king of Granada and his men.
