In May of 2019, the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in the U.S. was commemorated. To add to the festivities, Union Pacific brought along its newly-restored Big Boy steam engine, 4-8-8-4 number 4014 built in the early 1940s. In addition, UP brought along another big engine, a 4-8-4 Northern type number 844 as well as its preserved streamliner passenger train. In this video we see both engines and the train running a few miles east of Ogden, Utah, the day before UP’s meeting of the couplers ceremony. We take the Front Runner commuter train from Salt Lake City to Ogden to view this event at Ogden station where Union Pacific chairman, president and CEO Lance Fritz, and Utah’s governor Gary Herbert presided. The next day, at Promontory Summit , the National Park Service arranged a re-creation of the driving of the Golden Spike during a day-long celebration with thousands of attendees.
