If your leather sofa is starting to look a bit baggy, creased, wrinkled or like it is “pooling”, you are not alone. This is commonly called leather puddling, and some people even search it as leather pudding. In most cases it is simply the leather and cushions settling as you actually live on the sofa. In this video I cover what is normal, what is not, how to reduce it at home, which sofa builds and leather types resist it best, and a simple leather dressing demonstration so your leather stays supple and clean without damaging the finish. What’s normal Real leather is a natural hide, it flexes, relaxes and forms comfort creases, especially on the seats and chaise areas where you sit every day. Softer leathers, softer cushion builds and big flat seat panels will show it more. A lived in look is part of the charm for many people, but I know it can be frustrating if you want a tighter, more tailored look. What is not normal, and when to act If you get extreme loose folds very quickly with light use, the sofa looks uneven side to side, seams look like they are being pulled, or the seat feels like it has lost support rather than just showing surface creases, then it is worth speaking to the retailer. Puddling is a surface behaviour, a support problem feels different. How to address it at home First, change the way the sofa is loading. Try not to always sit in the same spot, avoid perching on the very front edge, and do not kneel on the cushions. If the seats are reversible, rotate and swap them weekly at first, then monthly. Second, smooth and “dress” the leather by hand daily for the first few weeks, then as needed. Use open palms and gently push the leather from the centre of the seat out towards the seams. The goal is to redistribute the cover tension and help the cushion top settle evenly, not to stretch the leather tighter. Third, keep it in a stable environment. Heat sources and direct sun dry leather and can accelerate uneven ageing. Give the sofa space from radiators and do not blast it with a fan heater. Which sofas to buy if puddling is a big concern Choose a more structured build and a more protected finish. Look for pigmented or protected leather, corrected grain options, and sofas with a more tailored cover pattern, more seams, and less uninterrupted flat leather on the seat tops. High resilience foam seats tend to hold a cleaner silhouette than very soft fibre or feather heavy builds. If you love a chaise, consider a design with more paneling and structure in the chaise top rather than one huge flat expanse. Which sofas to avoid if you want a tight, uniform look Avoid very soft aniline leathers, ultra relaxed “sink in” builds, oversized pillow top seating, and big flat modular seat tops with minimal seaming. These can feel amazing, but they will usually show comfort creases and pooling earlier, because that softness has to come from somewhere. Leather dressing demonstration, safe method Step 1, identify your leather type first, because not every leather wants the same product. If you are unsure, do not guess. Step 2, always pre test in a hidden area. Step 3, use a clean soft cloth, apply a small amount of a water based upholstery leather conditioner or protection cream to the cloth, not directly onto the sofa. Step 4, wipe in light circular movements, working one panel at a time, then let it dry. Step 5, lightly buff with a clean dry cloth. Step 6, do not use household wipes, oils, solvents, saddle soap, “leather food”, or random creams. Stick to products intended for upholstery leather, and follow the manufacturer guidance for your specific finish. If you want, comment with your sofa type, cushion build and leather finish, and I will tell you what level of creasing you should expect, and how to reduce it without risking the finish. #LeatherSofa #LeatherCare #SofaCare #FurnitureTips #SofaBuyingGuide An Ombudsman published decision quotes typical manufacturer wording that leather is inclined to stretch and show creasing on cushion tops, and that this can be normal for certain upholstery styles.
