A passage across the North Sea to the rivers of East England — and their hidden histories. We departed from Den Helder and crossed 132 nautical miles of rougher-than-expected sea to make landfall at Southwold, just in time for high water on the River Blyth. In the following days, we explored the River Ore’s marshland nature reserves, entered the Deben through its narrow and shifting mouth, and reached the River Orwell — where Thames barges still sail past the container docks of Felixstowe. These rivers wind through quiet villages, tidal reedbeds, and forgotten corners of trade. They are remote, intricate, and utterly beautiful. The return led us to IJmuiden, through the Nordzeekanaal to Amsterdam and into the IJsselmeer — from fog to city lights, and back to calm. 00:36 Den Helder, Netherlands – North Sea 04:20 River Blyth, Southwold 05:56 River Ore 06:37 River Butley 08:00 River Deben 10:00 River Orwell 11:00 North Sea crossing from Harwich to IJmuiden 🎵 Original music composed aboard, as always. #EastCoastSailing #NorthSeaPassage #RiverDeben #RiverOre #OrwellEstuary #SailingEngland For expert content on East England's rivers: – East Coast Pilot, published by Imray https://www.eastcoastpilot.com/ –@samingosailing, e.g. • Sailing Solo 2024 The Thames Estuary Part 1 – @KeepTurningLeft, starting here: • Suffolk Shallow Sailing Day 1 07.30 the Plan
