These roads are vital for delivering fuel to remote communities and First Nations, many of which are inaccessible by land or water during the rest of the year. This created an emergency, as many communities rely on these fuel deliveries for power and heating, prompting the province to contract all available licensed fuel carriers to fly in and deliver fuel. Operators from across Canada and Alaska flew into Thompson, Manitoba—“The Hub of the North”—to serve as their base of operations. Many beautiful aircraft showed up, including Twin Otters, Bristol Freighters, C-46s, DC-3s, DC-6s, and SC.7 Skyvans, to name a few.
