In this video I show you how to translate iconic English video game titles into German to learn real vocabulary – using Resident Evil, Alice: Madness Returns and Tomb Raider as examples. 🎮🇩🇪 Level: B1–C2 (intermediate to advanced) I go through the meanings behind each English title, play with possible German versions and build useful vocabulary fields around horror, madness and tombs. As a German native speaker, I show you which direct translations work, which sound weird and how Germans would actually talk about these games. What you learn in this lesson: Resident Evil / Biohazard – how to express “biological danger” in German Alice: Madness Returns – ways to say “Wahnsinn” and “zurückkehren” naturally Tomb Raider – German words for tombs, raiders and grave robbers lots of extra vocabulary around zombies, mansions, danger and creepy settings 💬 Mini examples from the video: Resident Evil / Biohazard → die Biogefahr, die Gefährdung, das Virus, das Anwesen, der Untote, der Zombie, der böse Anwohner Alice: Madness Returns → Alice im Wunderland, Alice: Der Wahnsinn kehrt zurück, zurückkehren, der Wahnsinn Tomb Raider → das Grab, der Grabräuber, die Grabräuberin, die Plünderer I also explain why “Resident Evil” isn’t just „böse Anwohner“ and why Tomb Raider literally means something like „Grabräuber“, even though we usually just keep the original English title in German. You’ll see how one English title can lead to whole groups of German words and phrases you can reuse in other horror or adventure contexts. This is not just about memorising three translations. It’s about training your brain to look at any game title or movie title, break it into parts (noun, adjective, idea) and then build natural German versions with real vocabulary. If you enjoy learning German with games, let me know in the comments which other game titles I should translate and analyse next. ❓ FAQ Q: What does Resident Evil mean in German? A: Resident Evil doesn’t have one fixed German title, but the idea is a “biological danger in a residence”, so we play with words like die Biogefahr, das Virus, das Anwesen and der Untote to show how you can express the concept in German. Q: What does Tomb Raider mean in German? A: Tomb Raider in German is often explained as der Grabräuber or die Grabräuberin, because das Grab is a tomb and der Räuber is a robber, but in everyday German we normally still use the English title Tomb Raider for the games and films. #LearnGerman #GermanWithGames #GermanVocabulary #VideoGameTitles #DefinitelyGerman ✅ Learn German with Dave — your go-to place for authentic German language, culture & media insights!
