C/C++ enumerations have some limitations (in comparison with say, Ada, where you get type attributes such as Type'Last for free, for example) but we can make them better, more robust and more maintainable by using the xmacros (cross macros) technique and getting the the pre-processor to generate code for us. In this video tutorial we look at a few of the flaws we may find in production code and how xmacros can improve matters. I had never heard of xmacros until I came across a series of three articles by Andrew Lucas on 'embedded.com' which I would recommend (search for "embedded.com xmacros" to find them). Having found Andrew's articles, I thought the technique seemed promising and when employed found it to be so and have discovered other uses for it some of which will be covered in subsequent tutorials.
