Mouthbrooding is a very effective way to raise young in an aggressive and competitive environment. The Rift Lakes of Africa are extremely tough environments for baby fish to survive and through mouthbrooding babies are given a good head start. This method also proves to work very well in the aquarium as females can be stripped of the eggs that then can be incubated in a tumbler, till the fry are developed enough to take care of themselves. This works out nice for breeders who want to breed a number of females at the same time or breed multiple species in the same tank.
