Inside our knee we have structures called the menisci which are essentially cushions made of soft cartilage. Their role is to help transfer forces & load across the knee joint. Without the meniscus the contact pressure in the knee increases and damages the firm smooth cartilage coating the bones and this eventually leads to breakdown of this cartilage, which we call arthritis.
