Palo Verde Trees of the Sonoran Desert - Arizona Tree Profiles

Palo Verde trees are one of the cornerstone tree species of the Sonoran Desert. Like the Mesquite and Desert Ironwood, the Palo Verde is also a nurse tree for many other plants and cactuses in the desert by providing shade in the summer and warmth in winter. They are also nitrogen fixing legume trees that help enhance the soil life for all plants and cactuses around them. There are 4 types of Palo Verdes that are found native to Arizona (Blue, Foothills, Palo Brea, Mexican) and there's a hybrid variety (Desert Museum) that can found throughout many of our Arizona cities and towns. The Native Americans used the Palo Verde's incredibly nutritious seeds as a staple food in the months of May and June. Local forager, Cactus Kelly, joined me to discuss the benefits of eating Palo Verde seeds. Lastly I cover two champion tree Palo Verdes, which are the largest of their kind found to date.
