Ever wonder what those daily swings in pH and temperature are doing to the SPS corals that populate your reef tank? According to a study published recently, they might actually be making them more resilient against larger swings - like those being caused by climate change. Of course, our reef aquarium's are somewhat protected against climate change - but it's still an interesting observation and anything that makes our difficult SPS corals more hardy is a good thing in my view. Saltwater aquariums can teach us a lot about global warming - we see mini versions of it when summer comes around and our homes heat up a few degrees. My reef tank actually works in reverse - it's hottest in the winter when I'm heating my home and cooler in the summer when the air conditioning is on.
