Would you like to easily expand your English vocabulary and learn new words? Would you like to learn how to make positive words negative with one simple trick? That simple trick is to use a prefix. ‘IL’, ‘IR’, ‘IM’, and ‘IN’ are negative prefixes that will help you to improve your English quickly. What is a prefix? A prefix is a series of letters at the beginning of a word that will change the meaning of the word and create a new word. The prefixes il-, ir-, im-, and in- all mean not. When you put ‘il’, ‘ir’, ‘im’, or ‘in’ in front of a word, it will make that word negative. For example: if you put ‘in’ before the word correct, you create the word incorrect. Incorrect means not correct, wrong. By studying words with the negative prefixes, il-, ir-, im-, and in- you can easily learn new words and improve your English communication skills! As you expand your English vocabulary with these prefixes, there are a few grammar rules to remember for speaking English and writing English. IL- is a negative prefix which is add to the beginning of words starting with the letter ‘L’: Il + legal = illegal Il + logical = illogical Il + literate = illiterate Il + legible = illegible IR- is a negative prefix which is add to the beginning of words starting with the letter ‘R’: Ir + regular = Irregular Ir + relevant = irrelevant Ir + replaceable = irreplaceable Ir + responsible = irresponsible IM- is a negative prefix which is add to the beginning of words starting with the letters ‘M’, ‘P’, and ‘B’: Im + possible = impossible Im + mature = immature Im + patient = impatient Im + balance = imbalance Im + mature = immature Im + polite = impolite IN- is a negative prefix which is add to the beginning of words starting with any other letter.
