Composer and pianist Eleanor Alberga was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1949, and she studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 1970. Although she initially shaped her career to become a solo pianist, her work at the London Contemporary Dance Theater led her to become the company’s music director, which increased her opportunities for composing. When she left the dance company, she was able to expand her span of compositional works into all genres, such as orchestral and chamber, also including works for the screen. Composed in 2015, this piece is dedicated to cellist Robert Irvine. To me, this piece represents a “ride through” a thought becoming reality. It begins with moments of rumination, each thought marked by a strummed chord. The ideas that Alberga presents eventually manifest into a fast-paced dance, ending emphatically with the C string.
