Titus 2:13, "[It teaches us to say, “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,] while we wait for the blessed hope – the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, …” Interesting points: 1. In this verse, Paul continues expounding on the grace of God, indicating that it is the reason believers can look forward to the "blessed hope." This hope is Jesus’ glorious return. 2. The New Testament mentions Jesus (re-)appearing on earth several times after His resurrection, as reported in Acts 1:3. This verse (as well as 1 Timothy 6:14, 2 Timothy 4:1, and 2 Timothy 4:8, among others) reminds us He will also appear sometime in the future. This future event is the one referred to as the "blessed hope," a phrase the New Testament uses only here. The adjective “blessed” tells us this Hope is not just divine but also indicates its effect on those that hold it: it changes their mindset and outlook. This appearing will be " glorious", indicating Jesus will come back in full authority and power. Paul refers to Jesus as "our great God" emphasizing the majesty of Jesus. Application. Brothers, this expectation of the return of our Lord and Savior can be a powerful motivation as we battle against our sinful nature and the many temptations that our enemy throws at us. Turning our eyes away from the things that can cause us to backslide, we can look forward in anticipation to being ready when Jesus returns earlier than expected -- for none know the hour of His return! Let’s take some time today to consider those that do not know our Savior and will tremble in fear when this blessed Hope appears. We ought to pray that the Lord will make their hearts receptive to the Truth and provide us an opportunity to share our testimony with them so that they too will decide to make Him Master of their own lives. The day is coming soon when every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. May all those we know and love join us in looking forward to the blessed Hope!
