James Gillick is an artist concerned with the recovery of permanence, the revival of the sacred, and the restoration of beauty as a formative force in culture. Renowned for his classical oil paintings and traditional craft methods, Gillick speaks here with philosopher Sebastian Morello in a far-ranging and richly textured conversation that explores the theological, artistic, and civilisational dimensions of art in an age of decline. Rooted in a profoundly Catholic metaphysic, Gillick’s work is a moral and metaphysical act. In this film, he discusses the need to resist the nihilism of contemporary culture by returning to the disciplines of the workshop, where the human person is formed through constraint, attentiveness, and love of order. He reflects that true art is not self-expression but self-forgetting: a lifelong act, a grand gesture. Over the course of this dialogue, Gillick and Morello address the collapse of artistic patronage and its replacement by a consumerist marketplace detached from transcendental purpose. They discuss the sacrificial nature of real art, its dependence on discipline and memory, and the dangers of a modern artistic ego untethered from tradition. Drawing on personal experience and philosophical insight, the conversation ranges from medieval craftsmanship to the theological implications of oak, pigment, and firelight. Together they argue that beauty, rightly understood, is a form of truth-telling—and that the workshop, rightly ordered, is a school of the soul. The Grand Gesture is a manifesto for the rebuilding of Christian civilisation from the ground up, beginning with materials, methods, and metaphysics. 🎨 About James Gillick: James Gillick is a British painter working in the classical tradition.
