What Is Tommy John Surgery?

Rick Papandrea, MD: Tommy John surgery is something you will probably hear about frequently in the news especially in regards to sports. It sounds like or seems like it is a very common surgery, but as a matter of fact is pretty rare. Tommy John surgery is named after a well known Los Angeles baseball pitcher who tore the inside of his elbow and had surgery to reconstruct it. The surgeon who essentially dreamt up the surgery was Dr. Joe and he came up with the idea to rebuild ligament on the inside of the elbow and it was successful such that Tommy John was able to come back and pitch professionally and that was about 25 years ago, so ever since then people call surgery to rebuild the inside of the elbow Tommy John surgery. It is a pretty specific surgery though and most people either they tear that ligament do not need to have the surgery. They will heal the ligament and get back to everyday activities. It is only somebody who throws very hard someone like a baseball pitcher, maybe a catcher, some gymnasts or wrestlers or javelin throwers need it as well. But for everyday people, it is not a very typical surgery. But there are times after an elbow dislocation or big injury where somebody does need to have the elbow reconstructed and the ligaments can either be repaired or rebuilt with tissue from somewhere else or you can donate a tissue. So Tommy John surgery was kind of a first well-known reconstruction of the elbow ligaments and it really brought forth other reconstruction of the elbow that are important for more people.
