American soldiers liberated the Buchenwald camp on April 11, 1945, where Elie Wiesel and other prisoners were close to death. He recalls Black soldiers crying in anger at what Nazis had done to people at the concentration camp, and the Russian prisoners of war who drove the American's jeeps into the city of Weimar to act out revenge. Before eating that day, Wiesel and other Jewish prisoners held a religious service to pray to a God that he says had abandoned them.
