In the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo children as young as 10 years old are put to work in gold mines, working seven days a week digging and panning for gold. Our Observer filmed them working on a recent visit to Luhihi, a village around 50 km (30 miles) from Bukavu, capital of South Kivu province. Our Observer, Idi Kyalondwana, is a gold miner himself, working as a supervisor at an artisanal mining cooperative in the region. He says that children have no place doing such work, which can be difficult and dangerous, and that they should be in school, as required by law.
