Future technologies for rail transport - measurement campaign in the laboratory train, March 2021

On 11 March 2021, scientists from the DLR Institute of Communication and Navigation, together with the spin-off Intelligence on Wheels (IoW), successfully completed a two-week series of tests on technologies for the safe, efficient and flexible train traffic of tomorrow. The aim of DLR's research is to bring more passenger and freight traffic onto the rails, to increase passenger comfort through fewer changes, to better secure necessary level crossings and to enable a more flexible composition of trains in order to optimise line capacities. For this measurement campaign, a specially equipped high-speed train, the "advanced TrainLab" of Deutsche Bahn, was used as a rolling laboratory with high-frequency technology, special antennas and sensors on board. The journey led from Halle via Göttingen, Berlin, Munich and Herrsching, all the way to Augsburg, and along the way two project teams from the Institute of Communication and Navigation were tirelessly at work. In the "V2X-DuRail" project, radio systems in the frequency band at five gigahertz are being investigated in particular, which should enable secure communication between trains, sub-trains and wagons, and with crossing road traffic. For the railway system of the future, it is also essential to be able to reliably determine at any time where a train is, how long it is and whether it is still complete. To this end, the "IMPACT" project team is developing a new localisation method that uses magnetic field measurements and also works where satellite navigation reaches its limits.
