Located just east of Beihai Park’s North Gate and south of Di’anmen West Street, this hutong is easy to overlook, yet it carries a remarkable historical weight. During the Ming dynasty, this area was home to the Neiguanjian, one of the twenty-four imperial offices within the inner court. It oversaw construction, masonry, painting, gunpowder, and other essential operations, functioning as a key hub that kept the palace system running. The name was retained in the early Qing period, later evolving into its current form, Gongjian Hutong, after 1911. During the Qing dynasty, imperial ice storage facilities were also located here, supplying the court throughout the year. Even earlier, the famed navigator Zheng He once lived in this area. Today, that legacy of power and ritual has faded, leaving behind everyday life. Gray brick courtyard walls sit quietly in the autumn light. Old eaves, air-conditioning units, bicycles, and pedestrians move side by side. Here, time is not narrated—it is simply lived. Gongjian Hutong does not stand out for spectacle. Instead, it sustains the most authentic rhythm of Beijing’s old city through daily routines.
