In this video, we study how to write an equation from its verbal description, such as: "20 less than some number is x" "The quotient of 16 and a number x equals 4/5". Then we look at several situations that are used in algebra word problems, and figure out which of the given expressions matches the statements in the situation. For example, if an item with price p is offered at half price, and Jane buys 3, which expression gives us the total cost Jane pays? Another example is that Sam buys 4 books with an original price of p, but they are discounted by $1. We need to figure out which mathematical expression gives us the total price of those books.
