We continued our time in the Svaneti region and made our way from Mestia to Ushguli. It is 46 kilometers from Mestia but the last 15 or so kilometers are unpaved and in pretty rough condition. It made for quite the adventure all by itself. Ushguli is a small village with only about 300 people living there -- it is actually made up of five tiny villages that go up the valley alongside the river. It is famous for these fortified towers, some being more than 1,000 years old. We literally felt like we had been transported back in time!
