Águilas del Desierto (Eagles of the Desert)

Every year, an estimated 500 people die at the U.S.-Mexico border. Águilas del Desierto (Eagles of the Desert) is a non-profit organization of dedicated volunteers who risk their lives to search for migrants lost in the desert along the California-Arizona border, helping families whose loved ones have disappeared while trying to cross. Since 2012, Águilas del Desierto has been rescuing people in distress or, when necessary, locating the bodies of those who didn’t survive the journey. Recognized experts in this difficult work, they find women, men, and children on their searches. To prevent further deaths, Águilas also provides education campaigns on the true dangers of crossing. The opportunity to help save lives and rectify a lack of compassion for migrants has been a source of blessing to Felician Sister, Sr. Maria Louise Edwards: “I’m just so grateful to God that he lets me be a part of this ministry and do this as part of my religious vocation. It has helped me to understand what it means to be a sister.
