Christos Zigouris has been a specialist surgeon for over 20 years. For him, the fascinating thing about his craft is that he can save a life with his hands. Surgeons are the craftsmen among doctors. This is because an operation involves cutting, sometimes even sawing, stitching and repairing - just like in many other trades. Moreover, a surgeon is literally a craftsman: surgery comes from the Greek and means “work with the hands”. Above all, it is important to adhere to strict hygiene rules, discipline and experience as well as maximum precision in the operating room. As a surgeon, he takes responsibility for patients under anesthesia during an operation, says Christos Zigouris. He has been Chief Physician at the Idar-Oberstein Clinic since 2007. When he is in the operating theater, he can rely not only on his experience, but also on his team. After all, despite ever new technical developments, from computer-assisted methods to robotic surgery, many operations are still primarily precision work. Special care is required for oncological procedures, i.e. cancer operations. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in Germany. Around 60,000 people are diagnosed with it every year. Hemicolectomy, in which part of the colon is removed, is therefore a very common operation. Even if the tumor is still quite small, a much larger section of the colon must then be removed to prevent the cancer from spreading further. For Christos Zigouris, this operation is routine. Nevertheless, the procedure requires full concentration. After all, the well-being of the patient is always the surgeon's top priority. This episode of Craftsmanship provides a unique insight into the world of surgery and shows how experience, precision and modern technology work together.
