“Get The Funk Out” by Extreme off their “Pornograffitti” album which came out in 1990 and features the extreme-ly talented Pat Badger on bass. I posted a few pictures of this bass on a Spector Facebook group that I belong to. I also wrote a bit about some of the work I had done to it. Anyway, in that thread, someone suggested a cover of this song and they happened to catch me at the right time. Most of you know how much I dislike tuning my basses down and would usually ask my friend, Jim, to bring the songs up to pitch for me. But, this time, for the sake of expediency, I just went for it and sort of liked the results. After tuning down a half-step I did not touch a thing on the bass - no truss rod adjustment, no raising the action…nothing. I can’t tell you how happy I was about that about that. In fact, I liked it so much that I picked a few other “detuned” songs out of my play list and started learning them as well…Alice In Chains, Kiss, Fastball, and even a Buggles tune. Also, for the sake of expediency and other reasons, I cut a few, small corners. For one, I homogenized the pre-choruses (there may be some subtle variations that I glossed over). Secondly, I’d swear that the little chromatic riff that happens just before vocals come in is a walk up to a B note, but since that made no logical sense to me (aside from being intentionally discordant), I ended it a half-step lower, on the Bb. Also, I basically fudged the riffs leading into the choruses as I truly could not hear exactly what he was doing. For as great a bass line this is, after the stellar intro, it just seems to drop way, way back into the mix.
