(29 Mar 1945) In build up for the crossing of the Rhine, the Navy took a large number of landing craft and ferries to the scene. On the Army front a stream of tanks and vehicles of every kind had been pouring towards the river. Airborne forces using gliders were the first to cross. There were many crashes and accidents to the gliders but the paratroops managed to link up with the ground forces exactly as planned. Winston Churchill watched the operation with Field Marshals Montgomery and Alan Brooke, and then he crossed the Rhine himself.
