35030 Elder Dempster Line. Merchant Navy Class Locomotive. 35030 was the last of the class of thirty Merchant Navy class locomotives, built in Eastleigh Hampshire in the UK in 1949. Its first allocation was to Kent in April of 1949. Nine years later in 1958 it was rebuilt to this form. Nine years after that it then hauled the last steam train from Weymouth to Waterloo in London on the 9th of July 1967. The model is based on the drawings and articles by Keith Wilson published in Model Engineer from 1985-1987. Frank Langmead a retired engineer sadly passed away leaving a chassis and machined castings of the cylinders, turned wheels, smoke box, plus cut frames of the tender of this model that was started in the early 2000’s. I purchased these at our Worthing and District Society of Model Engineers club auction in 2007 that were selling this on behalf of the family. I didn’t start work immediately as I was finishing a 0-6-0 Metre Maid locomotive. Work commenced in earnest on the Merchant Navy class locomotive in 2010. My background is from the print industry, but with evening classes and excellent advice from my many friends within the club, progress was methodical as I gained new skills throughout the build. After completing the chassis it was first run on air in 2016. The boiler was started the following year but having never built a boiler I was lucky to have so many knowledgeable friends within the club who monitored my work closely throughout the many and various stages of construction. Just as the boiler was ready for the big silver soldering of the stays, Covid struck and it delayed the finishing. The boiler passed its Shell Test Hydraulic in 2022, work then commenced on the cleading and cab fitting. The locomotive passed its steam test in July 2024 with both injectors and the three safety valves working perfectly. The safety valves had been previously tested on the club’s test rig boiler. The track test threw up several issues to be rectified. The springing on the rear pony truck needed adjustment, and the three-pump lubricator fitted between the front frames was unreliable. This has since been replaced with three cam operated lubricators mounted either side on the running boards which gives a much more reliable feed to the cylinders. There are still a few tweaks to be done, but it’s a powerful locomotive, which needs careful operation when using the regulator.
