The importance of Brahmaputra river and Chilmari port is immense. The Brahmaputra is the eighth largest river in the world. Abbas Uddin's famous Bhavaiya song about Chilmari port is still an asset of Bengali folk music. During the British rule, large ships used to ply the Brahmaputra river adjacent to this Chilmari port. At present the port is unsuitable for navigation due to the reduced navigability of the river, only the shipping business survives. Although limited in size, the port is still in operation.
