A working third-alarm apartment fire tore through a residential complex in the East Valley early Saturday morning, leaving six people critically injured and displacing residents. Mesa Fire and Medical crews were dispatched just before 2 a.m., with the initial call coming in at 1:54 a.m. on Fire Channel B3, to an apartment complex near 2100 South Pennington Way, close to Baseline Road and Dobson Road in Mesa. Fire officials say the blaze quickly escalated, prompting a third alarm response that brought in multiple battalion chiefs, engine companies, ladder trucks, and medical units. Crews encountered heavy fire conditions upon arrival. Six burn victims were located and transported with major injuries to a designated burn center, according to Mesa Fire and Medical. Their current conditions have not yet been released. Firefighters faced additional challenges during the incident, including difficulty shutting off a nearby fire hydrant valve, which required assistance from the City of Mesa to secure water control. Crews worked for approximately three hours before the fire was declared under control. Fire officials say the apartment involved is a total loss, with extensive damage visible throughout multiple units. In an exclusive interview, Mesa Fire and Medical Captain Richard H. confirmed that investigators will remain on scene throughout the day to determine the cause of the fire. No further injuries have been reported at this time.
