Jubilent crowds wave Russian flags and the fleet is decorated with streamers. You could be forgiven for assuming that this was Russia. Oleksandr Popvych is a police officer here. "I was born in Ukraine, I live in Ukraine, I am Ukrainian", he says. "Why do I feel like a foreigner here?" In the aftermath of Russia's war with Georgia, NATO brought a ship here at Ukraine's request. The Russian inhabitants were furious and violent protests ensued. The fleet shows no sign of leaving. "We will become a second Ossetia", says local man Mikolai Melnikov. "I have plans to move elsewhere before open conflict breaks out."
