Prof. Ademola Araoye in this interview, explains his article, “Patrice Talon, Bola Tinubu, and the Challenge of the Illegitimacy of National and Sub-Regional Order,” offering a sharp critique of governance and power in West Africa. Using Benin Republic as a case study, he contends that the failure of a recent coup does not automatically validate the political order it sought to upend, arguing that coups are not inherently negative in contexts where democracy has lost legitimacy. He describes Benin under President Patrice Talon as a rogue state and questions Nigeria’s role in intervening to preserve that government, warning that such actions may deepen regional instability. Prof. Araoye predicts that more coups are likely if the prevailing model of democracy in West Africa remains unchanged and cautions that the current political trajectory could trigger sub-regional conflicts. A retired United Nations official and former Director of the Abuja Leadership Centre, a TETFund Centre of Excellence in Public Governance and Leadership at the University of Abuja, Prof. Araoye is also the author of Sources of Conflict in the Post-Colonial African State.
