Sunburst Relic Telecaster Luthier's and woodworker, please share your feedback. The goal was a custom finish capturing this client's love of the color orange and coffee and espresso. While not intended to be a "relic" in terms of a faux damaged finish, it was intended to come out looking old. I chose to do a minwax water-base finish to take advantage of the quicker dry times. First 2 coats of ‎‪@aquacoatinc4702‬ grain filler. Then 1 coat of ‎‪@MinwaxUSA‬ pre stain conditioner. Next time, I'm gonna try doing the grain filler as the 3rd step. Initial coat fiesta orange, sanded back. Followed by coffee, sanded back, and then espresso for the dark. Then many steps of adding stain and sanding back. Each time leaving and rebuilding the orange at the corners, replicating the feel of an orange binding. One last hand sanding with 600. Then 3 coats of minwax water-based poly. Let it sit overnight, light sanding at 800. 3 more coats, sit overnight. And then 3 more coats, sanding, rest, and 3 final coats. 12 spray coats in all. We had planned to sand and polish to a glossy buff, but he loved the satin finish so much that he requested to keep it that way. It really does help with the "Relic feel. This build used a classic 50's ‎‪@fender‬ neck. Paired with the ‎‪@stewmac‬ tele hardware kit. The final build is pretty well consistent with the true 50's tele. The stewmac pickups sound amazing, warm while retaining the signature twang. I leaned heavily on content from ‎‪@DriftwoodGuitars‬, I'd love your feedback.
