#oil #gas #energy #jobs #newgrad #canada After working for the oil and gas industry for 13 years in Alberta, I developed a level of understanding about the industry that I feel like is important for young and new grads to know. In this video, I shared with you few reasons as to why you should avoid working for Oil and Gas industry. 1. Unreliable employment: The industry is on life support i.e. shrinking and will not exist in the same shape and form as it is today and yesterday. Many jobs are going to lower cost centres to keep cost low, profit high/moderate even when the price of commodity goes down (and it will eventually go down as commodity business is cyclical) 2. Limited move-up opportunity: Shrinking employment pool limits potential opportunity to move up in the food chain 3. Not-in-demand transferrable skills: Pump/motor/steel and project management might be same; what is different is your skills will be looked upon with disbelief as you worked in an industry that will not exist in the near future even though in your mind you have 'solid' transferrable skills 4. Climate Change and global warming: Oil and gas industry is tied with this negative connotation when it comes to climate change. Why work for an industry that will not make you proud when talking to your grand kids 30 years from now. 5. Investment challenges: Investment will primarily be driven by regulatory compliance, risk mitigation and sustainment of existing assets. Some investment in the carbon capture and CO2 emission reduction will happen but that is also driven primarily by ESG (to look good) and regulatory requirements. Hear about share buybacks by the companies? This is because there is no (very limited) good investment opportunity. This means limited or no major Canadian expansion. Natural Gas will continue to expand for a while. However, if you are young; I would not get into the mess now! Any more reasons you need to keep yourself safe and away from this dying industry? Disclaimer: the views shared in this video is mine only. If you are a veteran in this oil and gas industry, I have lots of respect for you. I know many are stuck in this industry and there seems to be almost no one who is of help!
