The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is one of the most well known, and one of the most beautiful railroads in America, even in the winter! We finally visit D&S for the first time on my channel. Nestled in the lower southern Colorado rocky mountains is the Silverton Branch that once was used by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Narrow Gauge system that spanned for many miles. While on our visit to D&S to see visiting RGS 20, we also get the regular trains pulled by the famous former D&RGW narrow gauge Mikados. We are fortunate to get two different K Classes running during our visit to D&S. On the first day we capture K-28 2-8-2 No.473 pulling the Winter Cascade Canyon Train, then on Day 2 while riding behind RGS 20, we get some action with K-36 2-8-2 No.480 at the station, a departure, and a suprise runby with No.480 at Tacoma (only accessible by train)! No.473 and No.480 put on great shows along the Silverton Branch. What makes D&S so special is the locomotives that once roamed these rails back in the D&RGW Days, are still running on the same tracks today, and K-28 No.473 is home to these rails as her sister engines also operated over these rails. Come along with us as we see two K Class Mikados whistle and echo thru the rocky mountains. We also get to hear two different whistles, a D&RGW 3 Chime on No.473, and a D&RGW 5 Chime on No.480. Enjoy A K-28 and a K-36 along the Silverton Branch! Rio Grande K-28 2-8-2 No.473- Built by ALCO in 1923, and operated passenger trains for the D&RGW on branch lines such as today's Silverton Branch. No.473 and her sister engines would also operate from Alamosa to Durango, as well. D&S owns 3 of the surviving K-28 class, No.476 and No.478. No.473 never really officially retired, and has been running ever since. Rio Grande K-36 2-8-2 No.480- Built by Baldwin in 1925, 480 was the first built of the D&RGW K-36 Class Mikados. No.480 was used along the Gunnison Division, and 9 more 36's we're built, today 9 out of 10 36's survive. Today No.480 is owned by D&S and has been operating on the Silverton Branch since the 1980s!
