After more than three years of research, the project TempoPlant: Semi-autonomous manufacturing cell for orthopaedic implants was successfully completed. Various technologies along the process chain for the machining of implants were researched in close cooperation with five companies from the industry. The regulatory requirements that are particularly important for the industry, such as the new European Medical Device Regulations (MDR), were taken into account throughout the entire duration of the project. This paves the way for transferring the project results into industrial practice. The manufacturing cell technologies lead to an 88 % reduction in process planning time, cumulative operating and personnel cost savings of €900,000 over a 20-year production period and an 87 % reduction in production time compared to conventional manufacturing.
