The week before Makai is always a little weather-obsessed, theories about nor'easters and southerly systems equally ludicrous and credible criss-cross our chat groups as we sweat on the 'holy grail' course, downwind from Sussex Inlet to Ulladulla Harbour. This year it became obvious from a ways out that we were in for a southerly, and the reverse course starting at the sleepy south coast hamlet of Bawley Point. It brings a little more anxiety, as apart from the apocalyptic 'we was-there' 2020 MAKAI race, it's the one where the highest proportion of paddlers have had a religious experience as the south coast swell butts up against Warden Head on the very last sting-in-the-tail section of the course. A big crew of us headed south, more than a dozen of the Dolls Point Paddlers and nine Sea Cliff Paddlers, all in fast sea kayaks, now made to feel very welcome in this elite ocean race. Once the Mini Makai was out of the way in the morning we headed south to Bawley for the launch, which typical of the Makai experience, had been brought forward to make the most of a changed forecast and a more favourable wind. Off the start it became instantly apparent that we had a zinger of a breeze, pretty much right up our hooters, and a nice little developed sea that was ridiculous fun. Lacking any race fitness I decided to relax and enjoy the ride, skipping around in the runs and trying to avoid anything resembling an effort...! The pile up at the headland was a lot less hectic than I remembered it being in past years, and I even got half a mile in alongside Rob who like most of the guys in sea kayaks, had absolutely lapped up the conditions. After a cold beer or two at the finish and a round of cheers for the medallists, we headed south to the Don's hacienda and told tall tales, laced with Moruya Pizzas and fine single malt, well into the early hours of Sunday morning. What a weekend, as always a seamless event put on by a bunch of locals who love sharing their waterway with us city slickers. Thanks to Damo and MAKAI Paddlers, yet another successful event in the south.
