Sibling aggression is common within osprey broods. Many studies over the years have shown that aggression is positively correlated with levels of hunger - they more hungry the chick is, the greater amount of aggression expressed. Agression is also correlated with seniority - the oldest chick usually being the most aggressive over time. Finally, aggression is also correlated with brood size - the more chicks in the nest, the greater amount of aggression. This makes sense, of course, as competition for food is increased the more chicks there are. So, aggression plays more of a part within osprey broods during times of food shortages - nature's way of selecting for the strongest. If food supply is sufficient, aggression almost never has a detrimental impact on the chick's survival, but for the odd graze or injury. Siblicide - death from sibling fighting - is very rare in ospreys. Most encounters of chick aggression in ospreys last anything from 5 - 30 seconds. This extraordinary video from Wednesday morning lasted for over four minutes. All three Bobs are now friends again and are doing well
