Meanwhile, three transmissions are sitting on the used market — forgotten, undervalued, and built to outlast everything GM makes today. The trucks that have them sell for thousands less than equivalent models. The transmissions themselves are just as strong. The smart money isn't chasing new. It's buying these. THE 3 GOLDMINE TRANSMISSIONS: • 4L80E (1991-2000) — Four-speed, massively overbuilt, used in ambulances and commercial trucks. Trucks with this sell $10K-$15K less than Allison equivalents. Rebuild cost: $1,500-$2,500 vs $4,000+ for an Allison. • 6L80 (2011-2014) — The mature version with all bugs worked out. Trucks sell for half the price of 2018+ models with the 8L90 — which had documented torque converter shudder problems. Pair it with the 5.3L and an AFM delete and you've got a 300K mile powertrain. • Allison 1000 Five-Speed (2001-2005) — Same tank as the six-speed everyone overpays for. The only difference is one overdrive gear worth 1-2 MPG on the highway. Trucks sell $8K-$10K less than 2006+ six-speed Allison models.
